Nautical Mile is a band from Perth, Western Australia who is the true definition of blending sounds into a cohesive and interesting arrangement.  Comprised of Brodi Owen (vocals), Nick Henrisson (bass), Dan Ray (guitar) and Caleb Wynter (drums).  We spoke with Dan & Caleb about the formation of the band and their goals for the new decade of 2020!  We are so stoked to see what this pop-punk band will accomplish in 2020.

WCBG: How did you become a band?
Dan: We actually found each other in a Facebook Group for musicians in the area.  We kinda came together through this music forum and have worked together ever since.

WCBG: Who are your biggest influences?
Caleb: All four of us have similar influence, others might be more far-fetched.  Some of our influences are A Day to Remember, The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus, Neck Deep, and State Champs.
Dan: Collectively we are huge A Day to Remember fans.

WCBG: What are you currently listening to?
Dan: Meant Well, Parting Ways, and some other bands.
Caleb: Trophy Eyes, You Me at Six, and some post-hardcore bands.

WCBG: What is your opinion of streaming services like Spotify?
Dan: It is great for the consumer.  You can hit play and find stuff you wouldn’t have before.  From the artist side it is not that great—it is a shame the dominant form is streaming and tended to kill the revenue from selling music.  Most money we make comes from touring and selling merch.  It is good for exposure and it is easily accessible.  Actually 60% of our listeners come from the US.
Caleb: Streaming services make it easier to have our music in front of everyone.  It is a way to reach a wide audience.

WCBG: What is your favorite album that you own?
Dan: Enter Shikari.  I own all of the repressing of the band and whenever they release a new vinyl I need to have it.
Caleb: Homesick by A Day to Remember

WCBG: What is your writing process like?
Dan: It is mostly me and Caleb.  I work with Caleb; he comes up with the drum parts and we work on the structure together.  We realized the band works well once we bring an idea to the table and a basis of an idea is presented Brodi can use it to create lyrics and melody.  Caleb and I flesh out the ideas further and every member of the band gets involved in a different stage of the process.  Subtle little things can change throughout the process that would have originally been hard to hear.  I normally come up with the guitar track and Caleb comes up with the demo track on his laptop.

WCBG: Describe your sound in 3 words.
Nautical Mile: Fast.  The songs normally range about 150bpm.  Dynamic.  Loud.  Varied, and “in your face.”
Dan: It is not always pop-punk/post hardcore.  We also look at prog rock and prog metal.  That’s probably influenced my guitar playing.

WCBG: What is your favorite part of a song you’ve written?
Caleb: I write the drum parts, so the drumming in Marionette.  I tend to play for the genre and what suits the music.  It is something more intricate and makes me excited.
Dan: My favorite song would have to be “Shattered.”  I basically wrote the whole thing. It was the last song written for the album.  I also really like “Regicide.”  I’m proud of everything on the album they all hold a special place in my heart.

WCBG: What is your favorite venue that you’ve ever played in?
Caleb: Capital or Amplify in Perth.  The Brightside in Brisbane is also a great venue.
Dan: Badlands and The Brightside

WCBG: What is the local scene like?
Nautical Mile: Perth is an isolated city.  Adelaide is about three-hour flight.  You have to make a big effort to make a difference to bring a production here.

WCBG: If you could perform with any artist dead or alive who would it be and why?
Caleb: A Day to Remember.  They continue to put out good quality music while staying true to the genre they intended to play.
Dan: Enter Shikari or A Day to Remember.  It would be one of those dreams to play with them one day.

WCBG: What are your plans for 2020?

Nautical Mile: We put an album out in October last year called The Only Way is Through.  We are looking at trying to get overseas for tour and run more promotion for the album.  We will also start writing again for whatever comes next!

WCBG is stoked to see what Nautical Mile will do in 2020 and we especially love the connectivity music has for our generation.
